teaching and learning

Click here for our long term PE plan

We believe that our curriculum should be both stimulating and engaging for our children, that it should be robust and challenging and that it should prepare the children for life as a well-rounded individual at Middle School, in the local community and beyond.

At Gravenhurst Academy we believe that learning is at its most interesting when it has a purpose and when it can be linked to other ideas and processes and to the world around us. This is why a number of our subjects are taught using a topic-based approach and we use our wonderful outdoor environment as much as we can.

Each Stage of our school has a long-term plan which details what is to be taught to our children at any given part of the year. As we have mixed-aged classes in our school, our Long-Term plan for each stage is set on a two-year rolling programme so that content and skills are not repeated and the lessons are kept interesting. These are attached to the appendix at the end of this statement.

This statement gives parents, teachers, governors and inspectors an overview of the structure and content of our curriculum but it is does not intend to replace individual Subject Policies which are still available from the School Office.

 Curriculum Days

In order to keep learning fun and interesting, each subject has a ‘curriculum day’ once year. This is an enrichment day for our children, planned by the subject leader. The aim of this day is to do something ‘out of the ordinary’ and get children excited about every subject!

 Trips and Visits

We believe in the value of trips and visits for all our children and during the year all of our children go on at least three trips as part of their learning.

Our school caters for the following ages and stages:

Foundation Stage:    from entry to school until the end of Reception Year

Key Stage 1:             Years 1 and 2 (5-7 years)

Lower Key Stage 2: Years 3 and 4 (7-9 years)

We have one class for each stage.
